To continue the tradition of the oldest student-run Winter Carnival in the country, Middlebury kicks off its 90th annual Winter Carnival on Thursday night! Thursday also marks one of the most fun/dreaded holidays of the year: Valentines Day. But whether you have a steady beau or are just making eyes at your proctor crush, I think that this year’s Winter Carnival events can work to your advantage.
Lets start with Thursday: as Winter Carnival gears up, what better excuse to hang out with that special someone, than to enter as a team into the Snow Sculptures Competition on McCullough Lawn. Any sculpture of Cupid will have my vote this year. And as the night falls, what could be more romantic than a kiss by the bonfire under a sky full of fireworks! Oh, and don’t forget to show off your stellar dance moves at Orange Crush (remember, there’s no school Friday so you can stay out all night!)
If things go well on Thursday, you can demonstrate your more athletic side at the ski races on Friday (free buses will depart from ADK circle). The weather report says that it is supposed to snow, so I might suggest bringing a warm blanket to cuddle under as you cheer on your fellow Panthers (it will be warmer than offering your coat!). And if you’re feeling quite tired from Thursday and are in great anticipation of Saturday, Comedian Adam Ferrara is putting on a great comedy show in McCullough Social Space on Friday night. I’ve heard somewhere that there is a direct correlation between laughter and love.
As the ice sculpture competition and ski races continue on Saturday, make sure to stop in to Crossroads Café at 3pm to split a nice cup of hot cocoa at the new Hot Chocolate Bar before putting on your fanciest shoes for the Winter Carnival Ball. This years ball features DJ 5 & a dime, and although he may not take the traditional dance cards, I’m sure you’ll be able to find your special song in the mix.
So buy your tickets at the box office! Tickets at the door are not only more expensive, but also the events may become sold out.
Have a fun weekend!
